Ultrasonic sensors

Precision through ultrasound

Ultrasonic sensors are used to measure distances and their changes. This allows objects in motion (approach or distance) or fill levels in tanks to be measured and monitored. The physical principle behind this enables reliable precision from which many applications benefit.

What is an ultrasonic sensor?

An ultrasonic sensor is an instrument that measures the distance to an object using ultrasonic waves. An ultrasonic sensor uses a transducer to transmit ultrasonic pulses and receive the reflected echo back.

The time interval between transmission and reception provides information about how far away the object is. Whether a few centimetres or several metres – ultrasonic sensors measure the distance precisely. This is because the sound waves propagate in the air at a constant speed of 343.2 m/s.

How do ultrasonic sensors work?

Ultrasonic sensors emit a sound wave with a frequency that is above the human hearing range. The transducer of the sensor is both a loudspeaker and a microphone. It transmits and receives the ultrasonic signal. Our ultrasonic sensors use a single transducer to send a pulse and receive the echo.

Acting as both transmitter and receiver, the sensor determines the distance to a target. To do this, it measures the time intervals between sending and receiving the ultrasonic pulse.

What are ultrasonic sensors suitable for?

Ultrasonic sensors require a surface that reflects the sound. This in turn makes the area of application so large. Because both liquids and solids have this physical property. Sensors do not come into direct contact with the medium. That is why they can be used in chemical, fuel, food and water tanks.

When measuring liquid levels, applications that use infrared sensors as the measuring principle have difficulties with this particular application due to the light transmission of the target object.

Ultrasonic sensors detect the presence of objects on conveyor belts or even the thickness of paper rolls in printing machines. These two use cases show how versatile the sensors can be used to automate human monitoring. Counting, measuring, detecting, warning – the areas of application are many and varied. elobau sensors and can be aligned to their place of use depending on the requirements.

Mobile application or industrial application?

Ultrasonic sensors reliably measure the levels in stationary tanks. If the tanks are in motion, the unstable surface of the medium can cause the measurement to become inaccurate. In this case, sonic tubes are used within which the sensor performs its measurement. Inside, the surface of the medium is constant. In this way, precise measurement by ultrasound is possible even with tanks in motion.

What are ultrasonic sensors used for?

  • Presence detection
  • Level measurement
  • Location
  • Distance measurement
  • Non-contact sensors are also called proximity sensors.

Ultrasonic sensors are also suitable for use in harsh conditions because they are insensitive to light, smoke, dust. As long as the surface does not absorb the sound, like wool, ultrasonic sensors work reliably.
